The Mazda MX5 is available with two engine choices, in 1.8 and 2.0-litres which deliver 126 and 160bhp respectively. The 1.8 is only available with a five-speed gearbox whereas the 2.0-litre engine comes with a choice of a six-speed box on the Sport model version.

It is not just the interior space that has grown, but also the ride quality. With the roof down and side windows up, wind buffeting is minimal and conversations can still be held easily up to around 70mph and is very refined with the roof up. The entry 1.8i is equipped with electric windows and mirrors and a four speaker CD player. The 2.0-litre model includes a limited slip differential, side airbags and traction and stability control. Options packs which can be specified on either model, add a cloth rather than vinyl roof, 16-inch alloy wheels, two extra speakers and leather steering wheel and gear knob. The 2.0-litre Sport model includes an option pack with 17-inch alloy wheels, six-speed gearbox, front fog lights, heated leather seats and sports suspension. Look out for the limited re-launch editions which have coloured leather seats, a BOSE audio system with six-disc autochanger, Climate control and enhanced trim.

There are several storage compartments in the cabin, and four drinks holders and enough boot space for a weekend's luggage which unlike some convertibles is unaffected by the roof.

Safety features include a four-star Euro NCAP rating with side airbags for the driver and passenger airbags as fitted previously. Traction and stability control systems fitted to 2.0-litre models plus an ISOFIX child-seat anchor point on the passenger seat. Roll-over protection is provided by the reinforced windscreen surround and rear roll hoops. An immobiliser with a key-based transponder and alarm provides the theft deterrent for the sakes of security.

Service intervals of 12500 miles and manufacturer's mechanical three years or 60,000 miles with bodywork warranty of six years.
